Messed up my first use of a tampon..i have a question?

So first period and first mistakes...I got that bugger in after an hour but i had no idea what an applicator was so I just shoved the whole thing up there and never took it out! I found out that this wasn't right by a stroke of luck..my next tampon I messed around with had the applicator come off before I could even do anything about it. Have I done myself any harm...should I be worried. I heard about toxic shock syndrome and I hva e the flu like symptoms but than again I did go to a party and got drunk which I hate to admit.
